In news that we can scarcely believe ourselves, we are absolutely delighted to report that within 36 hours of returning to Great Central metals, 45305 is going to haul trains this weekend. You read that right.

One of the most demanded and seemingly simple requests on the 'Black Five Bucket List' was to run the loco at Loughborough, and at 1000 on Saturday, 45305 will depart for Leicester North for the first time in, well, too long.

After carrying out a thorough inspection of 45305 upon arrival, the problem was nailed down to leaking stay bushes, in particular the one just behind the main frame. With a little improvisation, GCR CME and 5305LA member Craig Stinchcombe managed to get at the offender to caulk it up, and the boiler has successfully been tested to 225psi today.

As such we are delighted to be able to offer the locomotive for traffic this weekend to see how it beds down. Sharing the roster will be '8F' 48624. Mr Stanier would be proud, and we're proud of Mr Stinchcombe!

We have no plans set at this time beyond this weekend so we hope as many people as possible will come and enjoy @Black5GTi, back at home. We'll be delighted to see you!

We are pleased to announce that in conjunction with our friends at the Great Central Railway, not only can you enjoy six trips with D6535 (three top and tail with D123), beer and hot food at the 'Friday Crompton Bash' next Friday, you can also be in with a chance to win a cab ride on the National Railway Museum's '33'.

All you have to do is buy your tickets online by Monday, at the GCR's website, (receiving a 10% discount in the process) and each adult ticket purchased will be entered into a draw to win a round trip in the Cab of D6535 as our guest on the day. The winner will be notified by email.

We very much look forward to meeting the lucky winner on the day. You can let us know you're coming on our Facebook events page.

We have to have a few terms and conditions:
  1. The winner will be offered a cab ride on D6535 on 27 February at the Great Central Railway, Loughborough, for which the winner will need to make their own arrangements to attend. No alternative prize will be offered.
  2. In the event of D6535 being unavailable, another locomotive may be substituted.
  3. In accepting the prize, the winner agrees to being announced as such and for media depicting them receiving their prize to be used by 5305LA/GCR for promotional purposes. If the prize is not accepted, another draw will be made as necessary.
  4. The winner must be at least eighteen years of age and physically fit to take part in the cab ride, and must obey the reasonable requests of 5305LA’s hosts at all times.
  5. 5305LA reserve the right to withdraw or terminate the cab ride at its discretion.
  6. This competition is run by 5305LA and its volunteers; no correspondence will be entered into.

One of the most often asked questions we receive just now is "When will 45305 be coming back to Loughborough?". Unfortunately, over the last little while, with no main line connection and no shortage of available motive power, it has just not been a viable proposition to undertake the two road journeys necessary to bring the locomotive back to 'home base'.

Well, it would seem the 'Five' has taken matters into her own hands, as leaking firebox side stays (typically, those hidden behind the frames!) necessitate a boiler lift, for which 45305 will return to Loughborough from Haworth very soon indeed.

The K&WVR have proved, as ever, wonderful hosts, and we are sorry that the 'Five' will not now be able to 'sign off' a most enjoyable and unexpected sojourn with an appearance at the railway's gala, which we nevertheless wish them well for.

With main line work in the offing for 2015, we anticipate stripping the locomotive and lifting the boiler soon after arrival at '42A', with the intention of completing the work swiftly.

Naturally, if opportunities arise following the work for 45305 to work passenger trains at the GCR, we will make this known at the greatest possible notice. Please be sure to follow @Black5GTi on Twitter and 'like' us on Facebook by clicking the button at the top right hand corner of this page.
